If you have read my blogs before, you are probably aware that I adore the finer things in life - whether it is the softest organic swaddles or a nursery that rivals a boutique hotel.
However, all that style means nothing if you are running on fumes from sleepless nights. Getting your baby to sleep through the night is not just a wish but an essential for your little one’s development and your own sanity.
Since I know that this is the difficult part of parenthood, I have shared some insights that have worked for me. I have blended a love for quality with practical routines that set the whole family up for sweet dreams, so you may want to try them.
Daytime Routines: The Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep
A good night’s sleep starts with a well-structured day. I have found that getting outdoors early for a little sunshine helps set my baby’s circadian rhythm. It is especially great if you have a chic and comfy stroller that your baby will love, and you will look good with it. Remember, your confidence matters a lot!
In addition to walks, regular mealtimes and keeping active are key, especially as your baby grows into a toddler. I try to make daytime meals a little event with adorable bibs and quality highchairs because creating a positive vibe around eating and movement really does carry over into sleep.
Bedtime Routine: Setting The Stage For Sleep
From about three months, I started a bedtime routine that feels special but not complicated. After a soothing bath and a cozy feed, I dim the lights, turn on a white noise machine that looks as good as it sounds, and slip my baby into the softest sleep sack.
The nursery is kept dark, quiet, and clutter-free, so there are no distracting light-up toys or musical mobiles. Then, I put my baby down in their own crib, drowsy but awake.
I have decided to do this because I have learned that babies who learn to fall asleep where they will wake up are much more likely to settle themselves back to sleep if they stir in the night. It does not work from the very first time, of course, meaning you will have to be consistent.
Sleep Associations: What To Watch Out For
Rocking in another way to get baby to sleep, but babies are clever and will quickly learn to need that motion every time they wake.
The same goes for feeding to sleep. Around six months, I started gently weaning my baby off these habits so they would learn to fall asleep independently.
If you need to get your newborn to sleep at night, try the gradual retreat approach. Each night, sit a little farther away until they are comfortable nodding off solo. It is a gentle solution for both of you!
Night Feeds: When Will They End?
Waking for feeds is totally normal for the first several months. Once your baby is on solids (usually by 6-9 months), they will get most of their calories during the day. That is when you can gently encourage fewer night wakings.
Creating The Right Routine Is Individual for Every Baby
In the end, the best routines are the ones that fit both your baby’s needs and your own style. Every baby is different, so there is no one routine that gets a little one to sleep through the night.
You will need to see what works for you. However, once you find your routine to get your baby to sleep through the night, with a little consistency, you will be reclaiming your evenings and your beauty sleep in no time.
